Plane Warts

What are Plane Warts?

Plane warts (also called flat warts) are small, smooth, slightly raised bumps on the skin. They are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and are generally harmless but contagious. They often appear on the face, hands, and arms.

Causes

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) – most commonly types 3, 10, and 28.

Direct skin-to-skin contact – with an infected person or contaminated surfaces.

Skin trauma – cuts or abrasions can make infection easier.

Immune system weakness – more likely to occur in immunocompromised individuals.

Children and young adults – more prone due to developing immunity.

Symptoms / Appearance

Small, flat-topped bumps (1–5 mm).

Smooth or slightly rough texture.

Skin-colored, pink, or light brown.

Can appear singly or in clusters.

Usually painless, but may occasionally itch.

Common on forehead, cheeks, chin, hands, and arms.

Treatments

Professional Treatments

Cryotherapy – freezing warts with liquid nitrogen.

Topical treatments – salicylic acid, retinoids, or cantharidin.

Laser therapy – for stubborn or resistant warts.

Electrocautery or minor surgery – rarely needed for persistent warts.

At-Home & Skincare Support

Avoid picking or scratching – prevents spreading.

Use medicated creams (salicylic acid) under professional guidance.

Maintain skin hygiene – keep affected areas clean and dry.

Boost immune system – healthy diet, sleep, and stress management may help.

Prevention

Treat skin injuries promptly to reduce infection risk.
