Blackheads

What are Blackheads?

Blackheads are a type of non-inflammatory acne lesion. They appear as small dark or black bumps on the skin when pores become clogged with oil (sebum), dead skin cells, and debris. The dark colour is not dirt — it’s due to the oxidation of oil and skin cells when exposed to air.

Causes

  • Excess oil production from sebaceous glands.
  • Clogged pores (oil, dead skin cells, sweat, debris).
  • Hormonal changes (puberty, periods, pregnancy, PCOS, stress).
  • Improper skincare (not cleansing properly, using heavy creams or oils).
  • Certain cosmetics/skincare that are comedogenic (pore-clogging).
  • Excessive sweating without proper cleansing.
  • Genetics (some people naturally produce more oil).
  • Symptoms / Appearance
  • Small dark or black dots on the skin surface.
  • Common on the nose, chin, forehead, back, and chest.
  • Skin around them is usually not inflamed (unlike pimples).
  • May cause rough, bumpy texture.

Treatments

1. Self-Care & At-Home Treatments

  • Salicylic acid cleansers/toners → unclogs pores.
  • Retinoids (adapalene/retinol) → regulate skin turnover.

3. Avoid

  • Squeezing/picking blackheads at home → may cause scarring or infection.
  • Over-washing or harsh scrubbing → irritates skin and worsens oiliness.

Prevention

  • Cleanse skin daily, especially after sweating.
  • Exfoliate regularly with salicylic acid or glycolic acid.
  • Use oil-free, non-comedogenic skincare and makeup.
  • Avoid heavy moisturisers or greasy sunscreens.
  • Remove makeup before sleeping.
  • Keep hair clean and away from the face/back.

FAQs

Q1. Are blackheads dirt in the pores?
No — the black colour is caused by oxidation of trapped oil and skin cells, not dirt.

Q2. Can blackheads go away on their own?
Sometimes mild blackheads may clear naturally, but most need consistent skincare or treatment.

Q3. What’s the fastest way to get rid of blackheads?
Professional extractions or medical facials give immediate results, but long-term prevention requires retinoids and salicylic acid.

Q4. Are pore strips safe?
Pore strips may remove surface debris temporarily but don’t treat the cause and can irritate skin.

Q5. Can diet affect blackheads?
High sugar and dairy intake may worsen oil production and acne in some people. A balanced diet helps support healthy skin.
