Omega 3: The Best Kept Secret In Beauty

There’s nothing quite like a glowing complexion to keep you looking healthy and youthful. Whilst most people put beautiful skin down to genetics and fancy products, truly radiant skin actually comes from the inside. Research has found that what we put in our body is just as important as what we put on our skin, meaning good nutrition combined with a tailored skin routine is the answer. Acne, rosacea, psoriasis, dry skin, wrinkles and a whole host of skin conditions are affected by your diet, so eating the right foods goes a long way towards eliminating niggling skin woes.

What’s Omega 3 got to do with it?

Omega 3 fatty acids, otherwise known as ‘good’ fats, are essential for the healthy functioning of our skin, hair, body and mind; so they’re pretty important! The most potent (and most vital) omega 3 fatty acids are known as DHA and EPA. These essential acids enter every cell membrane and work their magic, improving cell flexibility, communication between cells, metabolism and gene expression.

Unfortunately, we can’t produce this miracle fat ourselves, so we need a good supply of it from external sources. The modern UK diet is sadly lacking in essential fatty acid intake; in the UK, the average ratio of non-healthy to healthy fats is 10:1, nothing compared to Japan’s 2:1. Omega 3 is mostly found in oily or fatty fish, like sardines, salmon and tuna (we told you the sea was great for your skin!). But, if you’re not a fish lover, you can get your daily dose of omega 3 in walnuts, canola oil and flaxseed.

Protecting us from the elements

Our skin is the barrier between our internal organs and the external environment; it shields us from germs and nasties that could make us incredibly ill. Omega 3 fatty acids play an essential role in cell renewal, keeping skin strong. This means essential nutrients can cross in and out, whilst invaders are fended off. Omega 3 also helps to balance oil production, adding an extra protective layer to the skin. All of this adds up to soft, supple, wrinkle-free skin, as well as a bolstered immune system.

Restoring damaged skin

We tend to damage our skin more than it would like, with sun, pollution and stress all wreaking havoc. An active supply of omega 3 strengthens the structure of skin cells and you can count on its restorative properties to heal the wounds of modern life.

Reducing inflammation

What if we told you there was a solution for redness and inflammation? Omega 3 encourages the body’s natural inflammation busters to kick in, relieving conditions like psoriasis, dermatitis and rosacea. In the long run, omega 3s reduce redness, swelling, itchiness and irritation – all positive signs of clearer skin on the horizon!

Giving you the feel-good factor

Busy and stressful lives play a large part in distressing and ageing the skin. Omega 3s aren’t just good for the skin, though. In fact, they’re a proven mood lifter and stress buster. These feel-good properties keep your emotional wellbeing in check, paving the way for healthy skin.
