Leg Thread Veins

What are Leg Thread Veins?

Leg thread veins (also called spider veins or telangiectasia) are small, thin blood vessels visible under the skin’s surface. They often look like red, blue, or purple lines, forming a web-like or branching pattern. They are harmless but can be cosmetically concerning and sometimes cause discomfort.

Causes

  • Weak or damaged vein valves → blood pools in surface veins.
  • Genetics – family history increases risk.
  • Hormonal changes → pregnancy, menopause, birth control pills.
  • Ageing → veins lose elasticity over time.
  • Prolonged standing or sitting → increases pressure in leg veins.
  • Sun exposure → especially on fair skin.
  • Injury or trauma to the leg.
  • Underlying venous insufficiency (in some cases).

Symptoms / Appearance

  • Fine, visible red, blue, or purple veins on the legs.
  • Usually painless, but may cause:
  • Aching, heaviness, or throbbing in legs.
  • Itching or burning sensation.
  • Mild swelling after long periods of standing.
  • Most common on thighs, calves, and behind knees.

Treatments

Medical & Aesthetic Options

  • Sclerotherapy → a solution is injected into the veins, causing them to collapse and fade.
  • Laser therapy (Nd:YAG, IPL) → targets and shrinks thread veins.
  • Microsclerotherapy → specialised for very small veins.

Self-Care & Supportive Measures

  • Compression stockings → improve circulation and reduce symptoms.
  • Elevating legs → reduces pressure.
  • Regular exercise → boosts circulation and strengthens veins.

Prevention

  • Avoid sitting or standing for long periods – take breaks to move.
  • Exercise regularly to improve circulation.
  • Maintain a healthy weight to reduce leg pressure.
  • Wear compression stockings if prone to thread veins.
  • Protect skin from excessive sun exposure.
  • Avoid tight clothing that restricts blood flow.

FAQs

Q1. Are leg thread veins the same as varicose veins?
No – thread veins are small, surface-level veins, while varicose veins are larger, bulging, and deeper.

Q2. Do thread veins go away on their own?
No, they usually remain unless treated.

Q3. Is treatment painful?
Treatments like sclerotherapy or laser cause minimal discomfort and are usually well tolerated.

Q4. How many sessions are needed?
Often 2–4 sessions, depending on severity and treatment type.

Q5. Can they come back after treatment?
Treated veins don’t return, but new thread veins can develop over time.
